BARN is a makerspace and a learning place. The BARN facility includes eleven fully equipped studios offering classes and tools for everything from Book Arts to Woodworking.  BARN’s mission is to build and support an open, intergenerational community of artisans and makers who are dedicated to learning, teaching, sharing, and inspiring one another with creativity, craftsmanship and community service. Our goal is to create a true community center, using craft as a magnet to bring together people who would not normally know one another or have opportunities to collaborate. We want to connect seniors eager to pass on skills with young people just starting out, and longtime islanders with people who have just moved here. Working side-by-side, participants will share tips, ask questions, and lend a hand when needed, building trust and new friendships. Community service projects done in BARN’s workshops will widen the circle of connections even more. The result will be a more resilient community—one where people have hands-on skills and are committed to helping one another.

Bainbridge Arts & Crafts is a nonprofit gallery that brings free art education and outreach to communities across Kitsap County. In fact, we are one of the region’s largest nonprofit galleries, supporting the livelihood of more than 200 Northwest artists, while serving close to 10,000 youth, adults, and seniors each year through more than 100 free programs—inside and outside of the gallery space. Founded in 1948 by a group of Bainbridge Island artists, we have a proud history as the first visual arts organization on Bainbridge Island and one of the very first in Washington State. We took a leap in 2018 to reinvent ourselves and build a more far-reaching organization. We transformed our gallery space. We gave ourselves a new name. And we set our eyes on a high-impact future—one that brings more free art programs to more people in Kitsap County.

The library on Bainbridge Island is supported by a unique public-private partnership. Kitsap Regional Library levies property tax dollars to fund materials, technology, staff and a host of library services. Bainbridge Public Library (Inc.), a sixteen-member nonprofit board, raises private dollars to maintain the library building and grounds. Kitsap Regional Library inspires our community to dream more, learn more, do more and be more. We serve our County's 258,000 residents through nine community library locations, online access to library materials and services, and mobile services to individuals with significant barriers to using their Library location. The Library has more than 400,000 physical items in its collection and we offer access to a wide variety of downloadable e-books, audiobooks and music and access to dozens of digital research tools. The library building itself features more than a dozen permanent art installations as well as a monthly exhibit in the large event room, with an opening each First Friday. The works of dozens of local writers are among the collection. A part of the Kitsap Regional Library system, the Bainbridge branch offers a calendar jam-packed with events, workshops and educational opportunities.

The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum is a nonprofit organization located in Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle. Our mission is to collect, preserve, and foster knowledge of Bainbridge Island History. Each year, some 13,000 visitors come from around the world to experience our award-winning exhibits which illustrate the Island’s past as a lumber and shipbuilding powerhouse, and then as an important center for strawberry farming. We tell the story of the forced removal of the Island’s large Japanese American population during WWII, the first of some 120,000 people to be incarcerated in internment camps. We provide a year-round educational program for Island youth and for visiting groups. Our teacher docents are trained educators that participate in outreach programs both in the museum and at schools throughout the region. Our 5 staff members help educators, writers and researchers locate and interpret historical source material using our collection of more than 18,000 artifacts, digital images, books and maps. As of January, 2019 the Museum has been FREE to the public! We're open Fri-Sun 10AM-4PM. Stop by and visit us -- bring your family and friends!
  • Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community
    Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community
Arts & Culture Org;  Association / Club / Group
The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community (BIJAC) honors the heritage of the Issei (first–generation Japanese) who came to the United States, and particularly to Bainbridge Island, to make a new life for themselves and their children. We hope to promote a better understanding of the diversity of our nation by sharing their history, customs, and values. BIJAC is dedicated to preserving and sharing an accurate historical record through oral histories and an outreach educational program. BIJAC's principal focus is the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial to honor those forced to leave their homes during World War II. Joining BIJAC in this project are local, county, state, and federal governments, as well as many, many individuals who have donated their time, money and energy toward its completion. BIJAC's other projects include an annual Mochi Tsuki celebration to ring in the new year and an annual BYOB (Bring You Own Bento) summer picnic that brings together old friends and new. Both events are open to the public. Other ongoing BIJAC programs are an oral history project, a traveling photo exhibit, Kodomo no Tame Ni ("For the Sake of the Children"), an educational outreach both locally and off–Island, and the Milly and Walt Woodward Fund "to promote the values of acceptance, understanding and respect of civil rights for all." The Woodward Fund is named to honor the former editors of the Bainbridge Review who consistently opposed the exclusion of Japanese Americans in the 1940s.

Now, seamlessly woven into the fabric of Island life, BPA has emerged as the quintessential heart of Bainbridge Island 's artistic community, a gathering place for the energy, talent, and spirit of artists, writers, directors, musicians, dancers, students, volunteers, and impassioned audience members. • Fumi Amano
    Fumi Amano
    Arts & Culture Org
Fumi Amano was born in Aichi, Japan. She learned about glass making as a traditional Japanese craft and worked diligently to master all techniques presented to her. In 2009, Fumi came to the United States for the first time to take a workshop at Pilchuck Glass school in Washington State. Upon returning to Japan, she continued to exhibit her artwork at APA Gallery in Nagoya, Aichi prefecture. While she was generally satisfied continuing the work that she was doing, overtime she began to gradually question how she used glass in her artwork. She realized that there was much more to glass than simply using it as craft material. In order to learn more about glass and expand her horizons, she moved to Seattle. She worked in a glass blowing studio in Seattle for about a year before finally moving, in 2015, to Richmond, Virginia to formally study glass art at Virginia Commonwealth University. During her graduate program at Virginia Commonwealth University, she faced many difficulties as both a foreigner and as a Japanese woman living in the United States. She was frustrated by the failure of the communication and prejudice towards Asian women by people. This frustration ignited in her a passion to make various forms of art, such as sculpture and performance art, to express a feeling she cannot explain in words. Glass is as if there is an invisible filter between people, Fumi says. People can see each other through the glass, but they cannot touch each other directly. Through performance with glass, Fumi is continuously expressing the unsuccessful attempts to develop true bonds that bridge the gap between people. After she received her Master of Fine Arts degree, she participated in residency programs all over the United States, including the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, Anderson Center in Minnesota, and Torpedo Factory Art Center in Virginia. Fumi’s art has received awards and accolades at exhibitions and Fumi has been invited to perform at several art events. In 2018, after her art journey throughout the United States, Fumi returned to settle in Seattle, a place that many well-known glass artists call their home. Now she is pursuing her goal of combining glass art and performance art. With her performance work, she is able to become a sculpture that is directly connected with her audience. Through this she is able to talk with others, beyond, above, and below language’s normal spectrum.
